The plant associations that characterize the steppe grasslands in the Alta Murgia National Park are protected as rare and therefore included in the list of habitats of Community importance (Dir. 92/43). The territory of Alta Murgia National Park identifies a complex environmental system and of great interest, characterized by large expanses of grassy vegetation in which they are absent, rare and pinpoint the trees and shrubs .. From a point of view of appearance, the landscape is dominated by a structure typical vegetation of the pasture rocky whose populations, consisting in all or almost herbaceous plant species, are united by adaptation to conditions of water shortages. The lack of vegetation cover
determines a limited ability to retain the soil, in fact is present in thin layers or totally absent so as to highlight the underlying limestone base.
